Rebuilding Bonds: FLOC's Holistic Approach

For Love of Children, Inc. (FLOC) is a 100% volunteer-driven organization with a mission to serve over 8,000 children in the greater Dayton area who have experienced neglect, abuse, or are in foster care, or in need of community resources. FLOC's 16 diverse programs aim to help these children reconnect with their peers and regain a sense of normalcy through activities like cooking, music, and arts and crafts.The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on these children, leaving them feeling isolated and disconnected from their social networks. Beth Mann, the president of FLOC's board, emphasizes the importance of helping these kids reestablish their routines and regain a sense of belonging. The Comfort a Child program, for instance, eases the transition for foster children by providing them with a new duffel bag to pack their belongings, replacing the often-dehumanizing experience of using a garbage bag.FLOC's largest initiative, the Christmas for Kids event, collaborates with volunteers and other organizations to ensure that every child represented by Montgomery County Services receives gifts during the holiday season. Through the generosity of the community, they are able to serve over 2,400 children in the Greater Dayton area each Christmas.

Building Bridges: NCCJ's Empowerment Initiatives

The National Conference for Community & Justice of Greater Dayton (NCCJ) has a mission to educate and empower communities to eliminate bias, bigotry, and all forms of discrimination. Adriane Miller, the executive director of NCCJ, emphasizes the organization's focus on prevention, addressing the mental health and well-being of youth.NCCJ's programs are designed to help young people navigate the complexities of identity, diversity, and inclusion. The AnyTown Youth Leadership Institute and Retreat provide week-long and weekend-long experiences, respectively, where youth engage in meaningful conversations and activities around racism, sexism, and other societal issues. These programs aim to build relationships and foster a sense of community among the participants.Another program, Students Promoting Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity through Education (SPIDEE), empowers high school students to become leaders in their schools and role models for younger students. The Police and Youth Together initiative, a week-long day camp, facilitates positive interactions between local law enforcement and youth, helping to build trust and understanding.

Holistic Wellness: Acumen Therapeutics' Comprehensive Approach

Acumen Therapeutics, founded in 2023, is a newcomer to the Dayton area, but its impact is already being felt. The organization's vision is to create a clear path for behavioral, mental, and physical health through counseling services rooted in accountability, patience, integrity, and care.Andrea Allen, the founder and CEO of Acumen Therapeutics, has observed concerning trends in youth mental health, including anxiety, depression, and poor social skills. She attributes these challenges to a variety of factors, including the pervasive influence of social media, academic pressures, family dynamics, and societal prejudices.Acumen Therapeutics offers comprehensive programs to address these issues. Their after-school therapy program works with students in small groups and individually to enhance pro-social behaviors, build effective communication skills, and equip them with healthy coping mechanisms. The youth wellness summer program focuses on building self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being through educational and physical activities.The 366 Change Program, an eight-week cognitive program, uses behavior modification techniques and cognitive-behavioral therapy to help clients challenge negative attitudes and disruptive behaviors, particularly for those who have experienced prolonged isolation."Our mission is simple yet profound: To provide quality services and care through a comprehensive, accessible, and proactive approach to promote personal growth and wellness," Allen said. "We are dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive space where youth, adolescents, and adults can explore their unique path to wellness, free from judgment or stigma."
