The Taste of Minnesota festival has undergone a significant transformation, moving from its previous location on Harriet Island to a new downtown Minneapolis site. While the setting may be different, the free music lineup on Saturday offered a nostalgic and crowd-pleasing mix, featuring a diverse array of artists from country music veteran Martina McBride to '90s adult-rock hitmakers the Wallflowers and homegrown alt-country veterans the Gear Daddies.

A Revamped Venue, a Familiar Vibe

The new Taste of Minnesota festival grounds are spread out across empty parking lots and blocked-off streets around the Minneapolis Central Library and the north end of Nicollet Mall. While the location may not be the most picturesque, the new site was able to accommodate the strong turnout, with organizers reporting more than 35,000 attendees by 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The festival's offerings have also expanded, including a new fleet of food trucks, four music stages, an amateur wrestling ring, and even a zip line, providing a diverse array of experiences for attendees.

Navigating the Echoey Acoustics

The largest of the four new Taste stages is situated in a crumbly lot between the library, Four Seasons Hotel, and other tall buildings, creating a unique acoustic challenge. The mid-afternoon set by rapper and DJ Sophia Eris with beatmaker pal Makr was particularly affected by the bouncing acoustics and other technical issues, resulting in a muddied sound. In contrast, the Jazz 88 stage on the north end of the Taste layout offered a more appealing vibe, with its shaded area and grassy surroundings providing a more comfortable listening experience.

Catering to a Nostalgic Crowd

The absence of huge social media followings or TikTok numbers among the mainstage acts suggested that many of the attendees were likely longtime Taste of Minnesota enthusiasts, having experienced the festival's evolution over the years, from its mid-1980s origins on Harriet Island to its later iterations on the State Capitol grounds in St. Paul. This nostalgic crowd was treated to a mix of familiar favorites, with the Gear Daddies' frontman Martin Zellar joking about "cutting the energy in half" before launching into crowd-pleasing tunes like "Zamboni" and "Stupid Boy."

Paying Homage to Musical Legends

The Wallflowers, led by Jakob Dylan, son of the legendary Bob Dylan, delivered a set that paid tribute to Minnesota music icons. Their performance was reminiscent of the Replacements, with bassist Tommy Stinson watching from the sidelines. Jakob Dylan also acknowledged his non-Minnesotan status, quipping that he didn't qualify as a "taste of Minnesota." The band's set included a rootsier take on their hit "6th Avenue Heartache" and covers of Tom Petty classics "Refugee" and "The Waiting."

A Country Music Icon Takes the Stage

In the headlining slot, country music veteran Martina McBride showcased her enduring appeal, despite performing to a smaller crowd. Her set featured a series of feel-good love songs, including her 1993 breakthrough hit "My Baby Loves" and classics like "Rose Garden" and "You Ain't Woman Enough (to Take My Man)." However, the festival's sound system struggled at times, with the audio cutting out during her performance of "Rose Garden."
